Hippotherapy provides an unconventional and exciting environment for therapy. Hippotherapy literally means “treatment with the help of the horse.” When riding, the horse’s pelvis has the same three-dimensional movement as the human’s pelvis while walking. This three dimensional movement provides physical and sensory input, which is variable, rhythmic, and repetitive.
After a thorough evaluation, Ark’s occupational therapist will determine if a person can benefit from hippotherapy. If so the therapist will develop an indivdualized treatment plan. While riding, the person engages in a variety of fun, therapeutic activities and receives input through the horse’s movement. The therapist works closely with the horse professional to manipulate various aspects of the horse’s movement, position, equipment, and types of activities to promote functional outcomes.
Although the treatment is individualized, there are many universal benefits that a person experiences though participation in hippotherapy including:
For individuals with mobility impairments, riding a horse might be the first time they experience moving without the assistance of adaptive equipment. Hippotherapy may be covered by a variety of insurance plans including Medicaid. For more information please contact Stephanie Green at 307-742-6641.
